(Dominic Fosu was the husband of our classmate, Rachael Ankrah-Fosu. This post is about both Dominic and Rachael, our EMBA13 classmate.)
By the time you reach our age Heroes are memories. And then, one day, you are surprised.
Dominic Fosu was born into the Ashanti nation in modern day Ghana. At age 16 he emigrated to New York City. In 1997 as an employee at Accenture he met Rachael Ankrah, also an Accenture employee who emigrated to New York City from Liberia at age 14. They married. They had two boys, Dominic and Reece.
In the late winter of 2013 Dominic and Rachael took the boys on a tropical vacation.
On the way home Dominic developed a headache. At 40 years old he had a massive stroke. When he emerged from the coma, 2 months gone, he developed meningitis. Part of his skull had to be removed to accommodate the swelling. He could no longer speak and his right side was paralyzed.
The Ashanti are warriors from the Gold coast of Africa. “I never had to wake Dom to go to therapy… he did it for the boys… He never stopped smiling…He did it for us”- Rachael. Dominic was able to return to walking and driving, but he did not regain the use of his right hand or his speech. In the winter of 2015 Dominic worked very hard with Speech Pathology Therapists and began to redevelop some limited speech capability- his understanding was never hindered by the stroke.
Rachael, Dominic, Reece, and Devin were able to take a family vacation to Jamaica in the spring of 2015. After returning home Dominic experienced a minor stroke and returned to the rehab hospital for a month. On the Thursday before the memorial day weekend he was released to go home. “He couldn’t wait to get out.”- Rachael
Two hours after he got home, Friday May 22nd, 2015 Dominic experienced a massive stroke. At 6PM he succumbed with his bride beside him. It would soon have been their 15th anniversary.
On Wednesday, January 19th, 2016 Rachael Ankrah-Fosu, Global Head – Capacity, Latency & Performance, NYSE Group/ ISE matriculated as a member of the University of Oxford as a reader and candidate for the EMBA degree – Executive MBA 13.
There is nothing more I can say.
